Mac turned over on his cot. For the first time since he’d gotten there, he couldn’t seem to get comfortable. He turned left, then right, then gave up with a huff and lay on his back. He could sleep anywhere: training, the desert, a field, up a tree, he could sleep. But that was when he could let thoughts fade from his head. Out there, he had others worrying for him when he slept, someone on point, someone watching his six. In here, in this small cabin, with a stranger in the next room, Mac felt uncomfortable in his own skin.

He remembered Sam. Very clearly. A skinny teenager covered in so much blood and so many cuts and bruises, it was a wonder he lived. To this day Mac wasn’t sure how Samuel Larson had pulled through after everything that had happened to him.

Sam’s sister had been in better shape. Yes, she’d been shot, but she hadn’t been the one beaten, or cut, or abused in any way. Mac shuddered and bolted upright in his bed. They’d gotten Sam and Jo back to the hospital, and it was Sam the docs had been scared for. He’d had tearing, someone had…

Mac couldn’t even bring himself to use the word. But that’s what it had been. What had begun as a simple hostage negotiation had become something very different. Mac had been honest with Sam back in the hospital. The team hadn’t seen anything happen, but they’d heard enough. Mac convinced himself it shouldn’t make a difference, but something in Sam had called to him back in that week in Japan. He’d only been twenty-five, his first team given to him, Bear, Spider, and Wade. It was natural for his team to jump in once the US had reassured the Japanese government that Mac’s team could be discreet, at least until after the rescue. They’d cleared the camp in less than a minute, not a single captor got the better of them.

He heard the low groan through the gap in the door and held his breath before releasing it in a rush of air. He rolled on to his feet and padded to the door. The moon cast some light but not enough to see if Sam was okay in the chair he’d dragged in.

Damaged vertebrae, a shattered knee, cracked collarbone, wrist, femur, not to mention the bleeding, the list of Sam’s injuries had been extensive. Some of the blood had been Jo’s. Hell, when the team had arrived, Jo had been lying on her brother, bleeding from a shoulder wound. Mac didn’t want to think where else Sam had blood. The run through the trees to ex-fil had been intensely focused.

Sam moved in the chair and groaned again. The sound wasn’t conscious, more a natural exhalation as he turned to make himself comfortable. There was no self-pity, no cursing, just obvious discomfort.

Mac made a decision. He crossed to stand directly in front of Sam and said nothing as Sam straightened in his seat.
